It has been a little over a year since I dove head first into the whimsical and magical world of essential oils. My family uses them every single day for various reasons. We even use them to make our own laundry detergent, bug spray, hand soap, and even our own lotions.
Some baby lotions on the market today contain so many chemicals it's seriously disturbing. Most are filled with carcinogens. Why on earth would a company EVER use ingredients in ANY product, never mind baby products, that are known to cause cancer?! It is so mind boggling to me! It's 2018. We have cars that can park themselves and yet companies can't find ingredients to use that aren't cancer causing?! Get with the times people!
If you haven't downloaded the app called Think Dirty, do it now. It allows you to scan everyday products in your home and it ranks them on a scale from 0-10. 0 being the best for you and 10 being absolutely terrible. It even lists the ingredients in the product and an explanation as to why the ingredients is harmful.
I started scanning my sons baby products and was in complete shock. His Johnson & Johnson baby products scored a 9 out of 10. It contained chemicals that were known carcinogens and caused reproductive issues. I continued on to his "organic" baby products. Don't let the little green leaves on the packaging fool you. These scored better with a 5 out of 10 on the dirty scale but contained skin irritants. I immediately threw them all in the trash. Ain't no body got time for that garbage.
From that point on I started making my own lotions for my son, Cole, and I freaking love it! It's super easy and very inexpensive. Side note: I switched to Shea Moisture baby shampoo instead of J&J or Babyganics. It scores a 0 out of 10 on the Think Dirty app.
The oil that I use most in Cole's lotions is an oil called Gentle Baby by Young Living. Gentle baby is a very gentle oil (hence the name) and it smells heavenly. It is calming and relaxing. We often diffuse this for my son at bedtime and even add a drop to his baths. It's what a moms dreams are made of.
I make this in small batches because it lasts quite a while. If it is a moisturizer I want to use on Cole's skin, I use shea butter or cocoa butter instead of coconut oil. The coconut oil with Gentle Baby works AWESOME on diaper rashes, cradle cap, and even baby acne so we save the oil mixture for things like this!
WHAT YOU NEED:
-- 1/2 cup organic coconut oil, shea butter, or cocoa butter
-- 8 drops Gentle Baby Essnetial oil
Mix together and store in a 4oz glass container (baby food containers work great!)
That's it! If you want the shea butter or cocoa butter light and fluffy, use a hand mixer to whip it. It literally looks just like frosting when you are done.
I suggest rubbing a little on baby's arm as a test spot to make sure that they don't have any weird reactions. Using this Gentle Baby concoction helps Cole ease into his nighttime routine and makes everyone happier and more calm.
